Ingredients
- 200 milliliters of water
- 50 grams of brown sugar
- 1 gram of yeast
Steps
Cutting the bottle
- Put 200 ml of water into the bottle.
- Measure from the water line to the top of the bottle.
- Divide your measurement by two and subtract 3 cm (1").
- Measure from the top of the bottle down this distance and make a mark.
- Do this at three or four spots around the bottle, then complete the circle. This will be your guide line for the cut.
- Cut carefully along the guide line until the bottle is in two sections.
- Retain both parts of the bottle.
Charging the bottle with chemicals
- Mix 50 grams of brown sugar with 200 milliliters of hot water. Allow the mixture to cool.
- Pour the mixture in to the lower half of the plastic bottle.
- Add 1 gram of yeast, but do not mix. This will produce carbon dioxide.
Assembling the bottle
- Invert the top of the plastic bottle and place it inside bottom part of the bottle. It will be upside down.
- Push the top inside gently until the cut edges match. At this point, the top of the bottle should be well above the water line. If not, empty a bit of the solution so that the adult mosquito will be able to fly in and not drown in the liquid.
- Secure the cut edges with three or four pieces of clear tape.
Replacing the chemicals
- Disassemble the bottle after 10-14 days.
- Wash the bottle halves.
- Fill with fresh chemicals and reassemble the trap.
Tips
- Use a lighter to gently melt the cut edges for a more finished look and less dangerous edges.
- Place the bottle near windows or where there is good circulation of fresh air.
Things You'll Need
- 1 two liter plastic bottle per trap
- Box cutter, utility knife, or scissors
- Tape
- Lighter (optional)
