How to Make a Model Greek Sword (Xiphos)

When the Greeks went to war, it was usually to engage in raids for sieges of rival city states. Major battles with foreign powers were rare, but the results could be devastating. While the primary weapon was a spear or javelin, the xiphos sword was employed for close combat. You can easily make a xiphos at home to re-enact the battles of ancient Greece with just a few supplies.

EditSteps

  1. Cut out a rectangle of thick card measuring 30 x 15cm/ 12 x 6in.

  2. Draw a line down the centre of the card as a guide.

  3. Draw a sword shape on the card. The shape should look somewhat like a long leaf, with the center being the widest point.

  4. Cut out the sword.

  5. Paint one side of the handle with black paint. When the paint is dry, continue painting the other side of the handle.

  6. Cover both sides of the blade with foil, and neatly glue it down. The foil will give the blade of your sword a shiny surface.

  7. Finished.
